My Beef Cattle Passion Grew From Dreams, Plans, Pursuit

By Jesse Bussard

We all have something we are passionate about. We have dreams, so we make plans. If we are ambitious enough, some of us even get to see those dreams become reality.

But in the end, like my good friend Doug Ferguson says, “It’s up to you.

It is up to you whether you pursue your passion and allow yourself to make your dreams become that reality.

For me, like many other young producers, that passion is the cattle business. You may find it surprising to know, however, that my cattle addiction only began a few years ago.

29 Days, 29 Lean Cuts

by Jesse Bussard

2012 is a leap year which means the month of February has 29 days this year. There are also 29 lean cuts of beef.  February is American Heart Month and in the past has also been I Heart Beef month for those of us beef lovers.

The latest research from Penn State University found consuming lean beef daily as part of a heart-healthy diet lowered LDL “bad” cholesterol by 10 percent, which was just as effective as the DASH diet.  This research study, known as the Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet (BOLD), provides convincing support that nutrient-rich lean beef can be an everyday part of a heart-healthy diet.

So what better way to celebrate heart-health and our love of beef by enjoying one of the 29 lean cuts of beef.  Starting today I’ll be sharing a different beef cut & recipe for the 29 lean cuts of beef everyday via Facebook and Twitter.

Fast Facts on Lean Beef (via Beef It’s What’s For Dinner):

  • On average, a 3-oz. serving of lean beef is about 150 calories.
  • Beef is an excellent source of nutrients, including protein, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and niacin.
  • Many of the most popular beef cuts sold at retail are lean, including T-Bone, Tenderloin, Top Sirloin and more.

Lean Cut #1: Eye Round Roast

A great recipe for eye round roast can be found here from the Certified Hereford Beef website.

Find more great beef recipes in the Healthy Beef Cookbook or search for recipes here.

I’d love it if other beef lovers would also participate in the 29 Days, 29 Lean Cuts.  Share your favorite lean beef cuts and recipes via Facebook posts, tweets or blog post.  Be sure to use the hashtag #29leancuts!

You can also follow along with my lean beef posts by searching the #29leancuts hashtag on Twitter.

Moosday: Moo! instead of Boo!

Happy Halloween to everyone and an early Happy Moosday!  Here on Pearl Snaps’ Ponderings we say “Moo!” instead of “Boo!”  I hope everyone has a wonderful night of trick-or-treating.  Here are a couple photos of the pumpkin I carved this year.
